I’m going to be honest with you — my closet was a disaster.

Not a “oh I just need to fold a few things” disaster. A full-on, can’t-find-anything, clothes-on-the-floor, bags-piled-on-bags, I-don’t-even-know-what-I-own kind of disaster. If you’ve seen the before photos, you know exactly what I’m talking about. If you haven’t, picture every item of clothing you own shoved into one space with zero system and zero mercy.

I finally decided to tackle it with the help of professional organizer Alex, you can find her on Instagram at @organize_with_alex, and she is absolutely worth a follow if you need inspiration or guidance on where to even start. Having someone help me see the space with fresh eyes made the whole process so much more manageable.

Once we had a plan, 12 inexpensive closet organization products, all from Amazon, helped make the whole transformation possible. Here’s exactly what I used and how everything works.

Step 1: I Took Everything Out

Before any closet organization products, before any organizing — everything came out. Every single item. Clothes on the bed, bags on the floor, shoes in a pile. It looked worse before it looked better and that’s completely normal.

This is also where I made my first real decisions — keep, donate, toss. If I hadn’t worn it in over a year, it went in the donate pile. No exceptions. Getting rid of things I’d been holding onto was honestly the most freeing part of the whole process.

Step 2: The Hanging Clothes Closet Organization Problem

The biggest issue in my closet was the hanging section. Everything was crammed together, I couldn’t see anything, and half my clothes were falling off cheap plastic hangers constantly. It was impossible to achieve any kind of closet organization.

The first thing I replaced was every single hanger.

Velvet hangers are thinner than plastic so you immediately get more space on your rod — I probably gained 30% more hanging room just from the switch. Nothing slips off, they all face the same direction, and the closet instantly looks more organized just from having uniform hangers. I used these for all my tops, dresses, and jackets.

Amazon Basics Velvet Skirt Hangers with Clips For skirts and pants I switched to these clip hangers with a 360-degree rotating hook. The rotating hook sounds like a small detail but it makes a big difference when you’re trying to grab something quickly — everything hangs at the same angle and you can actually see each piece.

Step 3: The Bag and Purse Situation

I have a lot of bags. This was one of the most chaotic parts of my closet — purses stacked on top of each other, getting crushed, impossible to find the one I wanted without pulling everything out.

I tried two different solutions and ended up using both.

Purse Hanger Hooks for Closet Rod For my everyday bags that I reach for constantly, I added these hooks directly onto the closet rod. The unique twist design locks them in place so they don’t slide around. I hung my most-used bags here — they’re visible, accessible, and not getting crushed. Also works for belts, scarves, and hats.

Step 4: Shoes — The Biggest Project

Shoes were honestly the most overwhelming category. I had them piled in corners, stacked randomly, and stuffed into the bottom of the closet with no real system. This section required the most products but made the biggest visual difference.

Shoe Slots Organizer (36 Pack) These are adjustable plastic slots that you slide shoes into at an angle — it stacks two rows of shoes in the space of one, saving about 50% of floor space. I used these for my everyday flats, sneakers, and heels. The whole floor of my closet instantly looked more intentional.

Foluck Stackable Clear Shoe Boxes with Lids (12 Pack) For shoes I wear less often, I switched to these clear stackable boxes. You can see exactly what’s inside without opening anything, they stack neatly, and they protect shoes from dust. This is the look you see all over Pinterest and it’s functional too — not just pretty.

Foldable Shoe Storage Organizer Bins (2 Pack) For boots and larger shoes that don’t fit in the boxes, I used these fabric bins with clear covers and adjustable dividers. Each bin holds 16-32 pairs depending on the size, which was perfect for my out-of-season shoes that I wanted stored but accessible.

Boot Hanger Clips (16 Pack) This one surprised me. Instead of storing boots on the floor where they fall over and take up space, these clips hang boots directly on the closet rod by the ankle. They hang neatly, keep their shape, and free up an enormous amount of floor space. I also use these for pants, scarves, and thick socks.

Step 5: Accessories and the Small Stuff

Accessories were scattered everywhere — belts coiled in a drawer, hats stacked and getting crushed, baseball caps I forgot I owned.

Acrylic Belt Organizer (2 Pack) These clear acrylic boxes have four adjustable compartments each and stack on top of each other. I rolled my belts and stood them upright in each compartment — you can see every belt at once and grab exactly what you want. They work in a drawer or on a shelf.

Hat Stand for Baseball Caps (2 Pack) No installation, just sits on a shelf and holds up to 14 baseball caps per stand. Acrylic so it looks clean, and you can see every cap without digging through a pile. I had caps I genuinely forgot I owned that had been crushed at the bottom of a bin for years.

Step 6: The Out-of-Season Problem

One of the biggest space wasters in any closet is out-of-season clothes taking up prime real estate. My winter sweaters and blankets were sitting on shelves all summer taking up space I needed for things I actually wear.

The 12-pack comes in four sizes (small, medium, large, jumbo) which covers everything. I cleared an entire shelf by moving my off-season items into vacuum bags stored on the top shelf.

The Result

My closet went from a place I dreaded opening to one of my favorite spots in my home. I can see everything I own. I can find what I’m looking for in seconds. Nothing is getting crushed, nothing is falling on the floor, and I actually know what I have.

The whole project cost me less than I expected — most of these closet organization products are under $30 individually and several are Amazon Basics which are consistently good quality at a low price.

The most important part wasn’t the products though. It was making the decision to actually deal with it — and then having the right tools to make the process manageable.
